To bitch or not to bitch, that is the question... Alright, I'll bitch!

I am sick. I'm sick of living in this state, this country, where bigotry and stupidity is not only tolerated, but is the celebrated norm. Yes, I'm sick of tolerance. Why should I tolerate the opinions of outdated bigots who pine for days when marriage was 'ordained by God' as one man, one woman? Have these people READ their fucking Bibles? Obviously not, otherwise they'd realize the Bible (and thus their 'god') only ordains marriage between members of the same 'tribe' (and certainly not just one woman per man). Unless of course the 'bride' is taken as a spoil of war... Yeah. So I guess they're against interracial marriage, too. And if not, why not?

I'm tired of having to justify my egalitarianism. Why is it OK to still be a sexual bigot in this country, in this century? To all those who say 'it's unnatural': have you studied sexuality in nature? I'd venture that NO, you haven't! Homosexuality abounds in 10s of thousands of animal species, we human animals are not unique in this aspect. Thus, homosexuality is 'natural'. Unless you mean unnatural as in "will not/cannot procreate". If so, should elderly couples be able to marry? What about couples who have no intention of procreating? Why or why not?

I agree that yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but no one is entitled to respect. That is earned. I cannot fully respect someone who would deny a fellow human being their civil rights because of a religiously held opinion. I've not heard any argument against gay marriage that is not either emotionally or religiously driven. I've definitely never heard one that is legally defensible. All I hear when people try to defend 'traditional' marriage is: "We're bigots! We reserve the right to our hateful, indefensible opinions! We'll be damned if any of you liberal, godless heathens drag US kicking and screaming toward equality!"

Some of these people are members of my own family. There are members of my own family that would deny my sister and some of my friends the right to marry who they choose. Sure, they were thrilled when I got married. I'm straight, I married a man. But my sister, my friends? Duurrr... marriage is ordained by God as one man, one woman... I say fuck that. I'm sick and tired of bowing out of conversations because I'm outnumbered. What irony! To be the most moral, the most ethical member of a family, and to be an atheist... One who 'can't have morality' because she doesn't believe an invisible man in the sky is judging her every action. It makes me want to laugh, cry, and vomit all at once.
